By Hanna Flint Friday, February 03, 2017 The Black Widow star takes on the lead role in the live-action remake of the iconic 1995 science-fiction anime film based on manga of the same title by Masamune Shirow. Scarlett plays The Major, a synthetic "full-body prosthesis" augmented-cybernetic human (AKA a cyborg) employed as the field commander of task force Section 9. Scarlett Johansson strips in the latest Ghost in the Shell trailer [Paramount] Technically Major isn't wearing a costume rather it's the look of her prosthetic body made to imitate her former human one. It allows her to perform numerous superhuman feats, such as superhuman strength, leaping between skyscrapers, advanced acrobatics, or shooting down a bullet after it was fired at mid-range. Her character, The Major, is a cyborg whose body is manufactured to look like a human's [Paramount] In the trailer you can see her using these abilities to her advantage as she falls back off a skyscraper, a scene taken straight out of the animated film. The film follows The Major and her task force as they face a new cyber enemy who will stop at nothing to sabotage Hanka Robotics' artificial intelligence technology. The film is based on the Ghost in the Shell 1995 animated film and takes inspiration from it too [Paramount/Production I.G] Rupert Sanders - who famously had an affair with his Snow White and the Huntsman star Kristen Stewart - directs the film that also stars Michael Pitt, Pilou Asbæk, Chin Han. Juliette Binoche and Takeshi Kitano. The casting of Johansson as The Major was met with wide-reaching criticism and the filmmakers were accused of whitewashing by not using an actress of Asian descent. Scarlett Johansson's casting was met with backlash by fans who felt the Japanese character had been white-washed [Paramount] There was also allegedly tests to see if CGI could make Johansson look more Asian, but Paramount claimed they were short-lived and did not involve the Marvel star. Ghost in the Shell is released in UK cinemas on March 31.
