Some of you may or may not have seen the recent photo of the beautifully, talented Sanaa Lathan. I couldn’t believe it. She cut her hair. Now, I’ve read that it’s for a movie role, but it was still shocking to see as it was unexpected. So many positive and of course negative comments about her cut. I can admit, I was taken aback at first and even muttered, “what the hell”. I just literally took me by surprise. How many of you would cut your hair down that low? I don’t think I could. I have my own personal reasons why I wouldn’t, however I commend any woman who can and is willing to rock such a style. Some woman can pull it off effortlessly. I am not that woman though. I think women, women of color in particular, need to get over the hair issue. Hair doesn’t define us. And, it damn sure doesn’t define your level of beauty. Your hair is nothing more than an accessory. An enhancement. You are not your hair. Don’t let lack of hair define the type of person you are or even dictate your confidence. I saw so many powerfully, beautiful responses from Black men. They loved it. They still called her beautiful. They still praised her. And if they can, sure as a woman, you can also. Ladies, you are beautiful with whatever style you decide to wear. If you decide to rock a brush cut. Rock it with grace and confidence. Own it , don’t let it own you.
